The Band I’ve Never Heard of: Cream

The first time I found out about the existence of Cream was very recently, while reading about Eric Clapton’s career. I had no idea that his fame started as being a member of the rock band.

Cream is a 1960s British rock band, consisting of bassist and singer Jack Bruce, drummer Ginger Baker, and guitarist and singer Eric Clapton. The band’s most popular hits are “I Feel Free”, “Sunshine of Your Love”, “White Room”, and few other songs.

Cream influenced popular music. They popularized the use of the wah-wah pedal, which is a type of guitar effects pedal, which is mimicking the human voice by a specific alternation of the tone and signal.

Baker and Bruce had a background in jazz, and like many jazz musicians, the three members of Cream would improvise solos at their concerts, sometimes at the same time. They could get away with it because they were such good musicians. The band would improvise both their set lists and their musical arrangements, sometimes jamming for as long as 20 minutes on one song.

In late 1968 Cream decided to disband—a decision that was largely a consequence of the tension between Bruce and Baker. The band’s six-track farewell album, Goodbye (1969, had a song “Badge”, which Clapton cowrote with George Harrison form the Beatles The band only lasted for three years. Nevertheless, the band played three times after their break up: at Clapton’s wedding, when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and in 2005 when they reunited to play four shows. In 2006 the band received a Grammy Award for lifetime achievement.
